WorkSafeBC
Occupational Health & Safety
Regulation 8.40 requires
that workers who wear face fitting respirators must pass an annual fit test
All respirators that rely
on a mask-to-face seal need to be annually checked with either qualitative or
quantitative methods to determine whether the mask provides an
acceptable fit to a wearer. The qualitative fit test procedures rely on a
subjective sensation (taste, irritation, smell) of the respirator wearer to a
particular test agent Fit testing of tight-fitting atmosphere-supplying
respirators and tight-fitting powered air-purifying respirators shall be
accomplished by performing quantitative or qualitative fit testing in the
negative pressure mode.
When
a fit test is performed we follow the exact requirements set forth in the safety
regulation. A consultant will review how to put the respirator on, how to
inspect it and adjust it properly. The technician will also explain the purpose
of the test, how the equipment works and what is expected of the test subject.
During the fit testing process the employee makes head movements that simulate
workplace exercises. A complete fit test takes approximately 15 minutes to
complete. . We provide all the materials necessary for testing, including
respirators and
consumable supplies with the exception of one time
use respirators that should be provided by the client. All you need to do
is provide us with clean shaven persons to be tested
Reports
- A management report is
furnished that will show the date of test, respirator manufacturer, model,
size, material, quantitative fit factor, and id number of each employee. This
report will be accompanied by a printout of each test and a copy of the test
questionnaire signed by the employee and testing technician.
- A laminated record card
is provided for each employee who is respirator qualified. This card will
indicate the employee name, id number, respirator manufacturer, model, size,
material, and date of test.
Additional, we
are able to train your employees on proper respirator use and maintenance and
provide written Respira tor
Safety Program.
Employees frequently misunderstand the use of
respirators. This program will give them the important facts regarding
respirator use. They will feel more secure in wearing them once they
know how to properly use them.
